Thanksgiving tradition at the White House: President George H W Bush, 2002
Original caption: "With animal rights activists picketing nearby, President George H.W. Bush quipped "‘Reprieve,’ ‘keep him going,’ or ‘pardon’: it’s all the same for the turkey, as long as he doesn’t end up on the president’s holiday table.” George Bush Presidential Library and Museum/NARA www.whitehousehistory.org/photos/president-george-h-w-bus…
Roast turkey has long been a traditional part of Thanksgiving celebrations in the United States. For more than a century U.S. Presidents have been ceremoniously presented with turkeys at Thanksgiving time as a symbol of holiday cheer.
These birds were usually eaten. Gradually the idea of sparing the gift turkey’s life took hold, and since 1989 these fowl have been "pardoned" and allowed to live out their natural lives.
